CODEPINK Action Ideas

All you need to make a powerful statement for peace in your city or town are a few people and a great visual.  You and a friend can make a difference today!  For action planning tips, click here to visit our Resource Toolbox.  Here are some of the most creative and high impact CODEPINK action ideas:

  • Peace Vigil: Pick a location to have a public vigil for peace such as outside your elected official's local office, a busy intersection, the sidewalk outside a mall or grocery store, or outside a school.  Print out Give Peace a Vote sign up sheets and CODEPINK flyers to distribute.  Need a portable table?  Bring an ironing board and a piece of pink fabric!

  • Pink Lemonade Stand: Set up a pink lemonade stand at your local farmer's market, county faire, sports event, or any public place.  Offer free pink lemonade and distribute info while collecting Peace Voter Pledges.

  • Vote for Peace Pink Ballot Boxes: Collect Peace Voter Pledges in public places by making a pink ballot box -- ask a grocery store for unneeded boxes, paint 'em pink, use an exacto knife to cut a slit on top, and write with permanent marker "Vote for Peace Here".

  • Freeway Bannering: Make a pink banner by painting a peace slogan on a long piece of pink fabric.  Pick an accessible freeway overpass or other public location where there is heavy traffic and plan to display your banner during rush hour (a.m. or p.m.).  Check out the Resource Toolbox for freeway bannering tipsClick here to see some inspiring banner drop photos.

  • War Victim Memorial: Display children's shoes to represent civilian victims of the Iraq War on a sidewalk or public park.  CODEPINK NYC did this action on September 21st, 2006: Click here for photos and details about how to do this action

  • Citizen's Arrest: Create pink police officer outfits (photo example coming soon!) and arrest war criminals visiting your city (such as Bush, Cheney, Rove, or Condoleezza), or military recruiters.  The pink police idea was created by the local CODEPINK in Austin, Texas.

  • Stick it to George: Get a life-sized cardboard cutout of George Bush and display him in a public place.  Invite passersby to stick their message to the pres onto his body by writing it on a post-it note.  Or film people telling W exactly what's on their mind.

  • Pink Phone Booth for Live Congressional Call-In: Create a pink phone booth (take a large box and paint it pink) and set it up outside your Congressperson's office or in a public spot.  Use a cell phone with free minutes and invite people passing by to call their elected official right then and there to voice their discontent with the ongoing occupation of Iraq.

  • Congressional Sit-In or Hug-In: Visit your Congressperson's local office, discuss the reasons for a withdrawal and an end to the US occupation of Iraq, and if your Congressperson continues to vote for violence in the Middle East, do a sit-in in his/her office.
Tried and True CODEPINK Visuals
  • Pink Slips: The signature CODEPINK visual!  CODEPINK "pink slips," fires, war criminals and uses women's pink slips to get the message across in a unique and humorous way.  Add a message to your pink slip with permanent pen.  Make a pink slip clothes line to hang up or carry in marches.  Create a giant pink slip to use for banner drops.  Make pink slip signs by cutting a figure out of pink poster board and stapling to a wooden picket or a cardboard spool.

  • Pink Statue of Liberty: Create a pink statue of liberty outfit with a pink sheet and a pink crown (find one at your local art supply store).

  • Give Peace a Vote Crowns: Buy pink foam crowns at your local craft store and write "Give Peace a Vote" or "I'm a Peace Voter" on them.  Add gliter for an added touch.

  • Pink Smocks or Pin-Ons: Cut pink fabric into a rectangle and cut a hole in the middle for the head to go through.  Paint or use markers to write peace messages.  Smocks are easy for activists to slip on at an action.  OR, cut squares out of pink fabric and write on messages; bring safety pins and pin the squares onto t-shirts.

  • Local Cost of War Receipt: Create a pink receipt showing the amount of money your city has spent on the Iraq War.  Find the figures at www.nationalpriorities.org.

  • Pink Costumes: Find pink wigs and boas at Halloween suply stores or thrift shops.  Be on the look out for fun pink gear, like pink cowgirl boots, pink '80s style ballroom gowns, and pink jackets.  Knit pink scarves and gloves for winter outdoor actions.
