Have you seen the devastating John Hopkins report revealing that over 655,000 Iraqis have died since our invasion and the polls show that the overwhelming majority of Iraqis want us to leave? Shoes, like the pair above representing the 3-year-old daughter of Hussein al Tarish, help people visualize unspeakable pain and suffering this war has inflicted on the Iraqi people.
The goal of this display is to show politicians who still support this war that they must see the consequence of their votes to fund war and 'stay the course'. There is still a lot of work to do, but CODEPINK organizers around the world (even in Bahrain!) are constantly asking all to "Walk In Their Shoes" with this somber shoe intallation.

The Empty Shoes of War by Alison Flensburg
Here are the shoes of a silent soldier, no longer polished bright, Here are the shoes of a little girl, who lost her life last night.
THese fancy shoes? They're wedding shoes that will never see a wedding day. These scruffy shoes? They're running shoes of a boy who tried to run away.
Look hard and long at these empty shoes. Think long and hard about war. Think about those who will never, ever, love and laugh, marry and be merry, or wear these empty shoes... anymore.

Walk In Their Shoes has taken the halls of congress! Activists are now placing shoes with name tags in congressional offices around the country. Cong. Lynn Woolsey of California accepted a shoe offering with honor and hung them on her door in DC.
