No War on Iran February 4, 2012 CODEPINK LA Los Angeles, CA | |

The corner of Wilshire and Western, part of LAs urban center, seemed an unlikely place for a demonstration against US and Israeli war on Iran. But it was heavily trafficked, cars, buses, pedestrians
A couple hundred people were crowded into a cement corner of the block, the Metro stop, calling out chants. Jim Lafferty of the National Lawyers Guild took the mic for a few words Now its a phantom nuclear weapon, was the gist.
The police stopped Jims speech short, while he insisted he was exercising his right to free speech. More police arrived -- bulletproof vests and squad cars.
An indigenous crew performed against war, incense and feathers swirling. LA Jews for Peace focused on the Israeli role in pushing the US toward attacking Iran. The Green Movement of Iranian-Americans donned green t-shirts and gave us I am Nada wristlets in honor of the students killed during demonstrations in Tehran. They called for no war or sanctions, and for an end to the current government. World Cant Wait wore the orange jumpsuits of political prisoners, along with black hoods over the heads, shackled and speechless. The ANSWER Coalition documented the event and Occupy LA was out for the day. The American Iranian Friendship Committee and the American Muslim Alliance were part of a long list of national endorsers.
CODEPINK also drew the connections between the false claims that the US used to bombard Iraq, and those being used to manufacture consent for further aggression toward Iran. Moving west to the Westwood Federal Building, a second demonstration of another 100 had gotten underway, called for by the Union of Progressive Iranians, the IAC and many others.
The demands were the same: no war, no more sanctions, no more assassinations, no intervention. Leave Iran alone.
If Iran were to be building a nuclear weapon to be ready in the next 10 years, it would pale next to the tens of thousands in possession by the US, the Israelis, Pakistan and India. Iran allows in nuclear inspectors, the Israelis never have, and the only country to have used such a horrific weapon is the United States.
