Advance bad press for war criminal former British PM Tony Blair suggested many already thought he was a bad choice for graduation at Colby College. When CODEPINK Maine and Greater Boston members called out Blair for lying into war on Iraq, who knew our seven person protest would lead news coverage of the ceremony? (Washington Post, WGME, Houston Chronicle, and Daily Mail, to name a few.) With a BLAIR IS A WAR CRIMINAL sign scrawled hastily in pink lipstick, we stood in the back row of the outdoor ceremony. When the intro began we called out "Tony Blair is a war criminal! He should be arrested. He lied us into war in Iraq. He's a war criminal!" etc. in popcorn fashion, each being escorted away as others waited to begin yelling. From local news coverage: "Among the signs held up by protesters, some read "Blair is a war criminal" and "Obama drones out." Several protesters held up a banner that read "Bring our War $$ Home.org," promoting an online anti-war movement. As Blair was introduced by Colby officials, some of the war protesters began shouting." The combination of visuals, audios and one arrest for refusing to leave the campus made a perfect storm of media attention for the our messages.
