Action at Wells Fargo June 15, 2012Occupy Pdx/CODEPINK Portland Portland, OR | ||

Local coordinator Martha Shelley reports: Occupy Portland leaflets different banks every Friday. On Friday, June 15, the target was Wells Fargo in the Hawthorne district. I took off an hour from my usual work to join the protest. Tom handed out flyers urging people to move their money, John held up a sign pointing out that Wells in the form of Wachovia laundered $378.4 billion dollars of drug cartel money from Mexico, and I handed out flyers talking about the banks' involvement in for-profit prisons and exploiting prison labor. As usual, some people wouldn't even look at us, others were happy to take our flyers, and still others wanted to know where to learn more. What interested me was that books and articles about the for-profit prison system have been available for years, but it was still news to most people on the street. We have a lot of education to do.
